Every framing project tells a story. Sometimes that story is about sports history, family memories, or fine art. Other times, it’s about honoring culture and craftsmanship.

Recently, a client visited our Roswell studio with two remarkable African masks. These pieces were rich in texture, color, and history, and the goal was clear: create a display that would celebrate the beauty of the masks while protecting them for years to come.

That’s where custom shadow box framing becomes essential.

Designing a Frame That Complements the Art

When framing dimensional objects such as masks, depth and presentation are critical. A traditional frame simply won’t do the job. Instead, we designed a custom shadow box that allowed the masks to sit comfortably within the frame while creating a museum-style presentation.

One of the most unique aspects of this project was the liner design.

As Lester Herbertson explained during the design process:

“We created custom liners to match the masks.”

These liners were carefully selected and designed to reflect the colors and patterns already present in the artwork. The result is a cohesive presentation where the frame itself becomes part of the artistic experience.

The liners enhance the masks without competing with them, allowing the cultural details and craftsmanship of the pieces to take center stage.

Why Shadow Box Framing Works for Masks and Objects

Shadow box framing is ideal for items that have depth or sculptural form. Unlike flat artwork, these pieces need space within the frame to be properly displayed and preserved.

At Regency Fine Art & Frame, shadow boxes are commonly used for:

• Cultural artifacts and masks

 • Sports memorabilia

 • Military medals and awards

 • Collectibles and heirlooms

 • Jerseys and uniforms

 • Personal memorabilia

The goal is always the same: create a presentation that protects the piece while making it visually striking.

A Finished Piece Worth Celebrating

When the project was complete, the result was a stunning display that honored the masks and the story behind them. Seeing the client’s reaction, proudly holding the finished frame, is always the most rewarding part of our work.

Each custom frame we create is designed specifically for the item it holds. No two projects are the same, and that’s exactly how we like it.
